DIGGING RUTHIE SOMMERS' DIGS

All photos by Victoria Pearson courtesy of House Beautiful

Do you know of a designer whose work always jumps out and grabs you?  For me, Ruthie Sommers is one of those people. Often, when I see her work, even before I know it's a space that she has designed, I have an instant attraction to it. I love the fun and unexpected elements she layers on along with the hues that I tend to find most pleasing. She somehow knows just how to integrate traditional elegance with a perfect dose of youthful spunk and always get it right.
This recent feature of Ruthie's L.A. home from House Beautiful 2011 just left me with a great feeling. Like the contented, satisfied state you often pass into after eating your favorite meal. A visual feast!

Wow. Every room is special and unique. The bathroom with all those photos on the wall stands out to me because it's so personal and real! Like you are staying college room mate's house. She has a fantastic way of making things look fresh, stylish and comfortable at the same time!

Totally agree! I have been a fan of Ruthie's since I first saw her on Area - a show that appeared about 9 years ago.

I am always drawn to her design asthetic. She just has such a way of mixing things that is so interesting and vibrant!

Thank you so so so much for including me on your blog! I am always insecure about my own home. Whenever, I have another designer over I always wonder what they will think! Sometimes I forget to decorate for myself. When Michael Smith was coming over to a party I bought way too many blue and white delft vases ( fake of course..).. But at the end of the day my house was just my house- nothing memo-ed for the shoot, all my things-mostly loved but a few stranglers from my store that I could never sell.. Anyway- thank you for the kindest words. Everyone made made made my day !

Thank you so so so much!!!!This has made my day. I am so insecure about my own home! When I had Michael Smith to a party once- I ran out and bought a load delft blue and white vases ( fake of course).. I had design ADD... who am I ? .. I thought
At the end of the day, I never memo-ed anything for this shoot. It was all items I love, could afford, have recovered a million times... and a few stranglers I never sold from my store... what can you do? This truly has made my week! and love this blog!

Anne,

Interior design is an interpretation of a personal live/love story we have the homes we enhabit. Shared with our world, family and friends.

Hi Anne, So happy to see this post as I haven't seen this issue of House Beautiful. Any opportunity to see the work of Ruthie Sommers I truly get excited!! I have many a tear sheet of her designs, and completely covet the ones of her own home. I still have tear sheets of her first house that was in the premier issue of Domino Magazine (miss that mag) many a years back, 2005 I think? Yay Ruthie! p.s. her shop in LA was so cute too!
