IS IKAT IN OR OUT?

This is a sort of design humor "cartoon" that I did last year.
Quote reads"Some people thought that perhaps Frances had taken the Ikat trend a bit too far". (click image to enlarge) The original is available here.

Recently, my friend Joni at Cote de Texas, wrote an interesting post examining the whole subject of design trends. She is making a series out of it "Cote de Texas' Top 10 Design Elements"- so it should be fun to follow her posts on her signature elements.

I personally don't think that you should worry about what's "in" or what's "out", but rather what you enjoy living with. I thought Ikat prints were supposedly "out", but I am still seeing them everywhere, even in fashion. What are some personal design elements that characterize your unique style?

I always admire those that can seem to always be IN with just the right accessory, and then I also admire those that seem to know when to have just the right of OUT in their IN to know that they are cool beyond measure. I just like people who are comfortable inside out! I would say a smile. One friend has accused me of having my "Outfits" ready to go in zip-loc bags!
lol.

Anne, thanks for the link, I read the post and I agree wholeheartedly with Joni. I wish the trend gurus (and trend guru wannabes) would stop telling us first to buy stuff, then throw it away a few months later. I appreciate the fact that a bit of change in our surroundings can be good for us, but we need to think a bit about sustainability as well.
I just decorate with things I own. When I get tired of it, I put it away and dig out something else. If I want another colour scheme, I change it using a dress, scarves and accessories like new napkins (my favourite decor element!)

I think that, a few years ago, what was in and what was out really mattered but nowdays I think that ( within reason ) anything goes. Very much like fashion. When I was young mini skirts were in then midi then maxi but today you can wear any length and it's still fashionable. I'm quite theatrical. I like a little bit of Gothic ( not too much. I'm not a Goth !! )We have a shop in the U.K.called All Saints where I buy lots of my clothes. I might do a post on it. XXXX

Hi Anne~ I have always been one to go with what I love. I mix my own style with family pieces and it just feels comfortable and inviting to me. Friends have asked for my help, so I think it all comes off pretty well. So great to be back here with you.

i think anything that saturates a market (as this fabric pattern has) is definitely in peril dying , sooner than later.

What a cute cartoon!

I think ikat (or anything, for that matter) is in if you like it, out if you don't.

Oh, and as for me, I am big on leopard and always have been. And I love sunburst mirrors and Chinese Chippendale and I don't care if they all go out (I hope they will so I can have them back to myself :-).

What's in, what's out - all I know is I like what I like when I like it! Cute painting and I am enjoying Joni's series too, xv.

Could not agree more dear Anne! First of all, I can't keep up with ins and outs, next, I usually cannot afford them, but mostly one's house sometimes does not conform. I heard a designer once suggest to buy those things that you really really like, and I try to do that but boy I could use a designer to help me with layouts...just not in my genes.

I love the cats...

I love, love ikat and will always love it. I think is timeless and I completely agree with Joni, she's brilliant.

I don't like to pay attention to what is in or our with fashion or home decor. I just like to go with what I like. And I happen to like Ikat, but more for clothes. My fellow blogger did a post recently on "modage" decorating. Mixing modern elements with more vintage ones. That is what I aim for. : )

very much agree. Super cute cartoon, btw.
The Ikat discussion reminds me of the coral one last (??) year when Domino called it "out" and yet, there it was... again and again.

While I admit I"m not personally that partial to ikat, I would certainly never tell someone it was "out."

And this is what shops like Target and Forever 21 are for. If I want to buy something trendy - I always go cheap - I like the term "disposable clothing."

Well they're featured in August House Beautiful so they can't be too out.
Im with you, though Anne. Go with what you like. The critics don't live in your house!!!!
And frankly thy're just trying to sell new product.

I feel if you love something, leave it... it will become classic to you...and who cares what the rest of the design world thinks!

I listened to the "Skirted Round Table" today on what's in in Kitchen design... check it out ... same deal... If you love it..keep it....especially the part about white marble....

Adorable!!! I love it!
I especially love your happy shot for today (the aqua and pink - PERFECT combo!) and your afternoon zinger. A midday swim is just the thing for us Floridians. What a great idea to pair it with an Annie Zinger! :) You are too cute. Hope you are having fun on vacay and thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Deeply appreciated.

every good design element has it's over done moment, dont' you think? then it fades back and years later will get revived {if it's worth its merit}

Hi Anne
I agree with you that we shouldn't worry about what's "in" or what's "out". Also I think that being Bloggers and creative people that we probably see more pictures of these 'so called trends' than the general public does. I am always onto the next and the next!!
